The OCCBLOCK is an innovative infant mattress. Unlike "normal"
cot mattresses, it has been specifically designed to address
common concerns affecting infants aged 0 - 6 months. These
are:
-
Gastric Reflux
-
Safe Sleeping
-
Mis-shapen Head (Occipital Plagiocephaly or "Flat Head")
What makes the OCCBLOCK so special? It has been
carefully thought out and designed by a registered nurse/child
health professional, specifically to assist with problems
parents are commonly facing when their infants are sleeping.
The
main concern was over the apparent rise in the "flat head
syndrome" since SIDS research has recommended that infants
be placed on their backs for sleeping. Because the head
is relatively heavy and the bones of the skull are still
moulding, pressure from the weight of a head on a flat mattress
can result in an asymmetrical head shape. This is aggravated
by the fact that a young infant can spend many hours a day
sleeping, and especially when an infant favours one side.
Concern about this problem led to the unique design that
is the OCCBLOCK. The concave shaped head support
is revolutionary, and acts to provide even support over
the entire resting surface, rather than just one point.
Because the pressure on the head is more evenly distributed,
the risk of head flattening is greatly reduced.
Additional features of the OCCBLOCK include:
-
Mattress inclined to reduce regurgitation and assist with reflux, because
the slope maintains the head above the stomach at all times
-
Pillow specifically shaped to spread pressure on the occiput and parietal
(skull) bones to assist reducing head flattening
- Three Point Harness maintains baby in a safe back sleeping
position as recommended to help reduce SIDS and prevents
baby slipping down the OCCBLOCK. (For safety, this
harness must be used at all times).
-
Sloping sides help make your infant feel more secure, and to prevent him
or her rolling onto their stomach
-
Mattress has been treated with Microfresh, a growth inhibitor to prevent
mould, bacteria, algae and dust mites.
And
the OCCBLOCK is simple and practical to use. It can
be used directly on the floor for daytime naps, or as a
portable bed, eg, fabulous for camping! It has ties so that
it can be secured to the vertical rails of the cot for regular
sleeps. Restraining straps are adjustable for a perfect
fit. The OCCBLOCK comes with its own support pillow
(secured in place by Velcro for infant safety) and a detachable
under blanket. The pillow, under blanket and outer cover
can all be removed for washing.
Suitable for ages from 0 to 6 months. Infants 6 to 9 months
can be placed in the OCCBLOCK as long as it has been
tied securely to a cot and is not being used freely. The
manufacturers do not recommend the OccBlock be used on older
children for safety reasons.
Leading paediatricians have reviewed the OCCBLOCK
and concurred that the mattress is safe and may assist in
addressing the issues of concern for which it was designed.
Here's what Tristan de Chalain, a consultant plastic surgeon at Middlemore
Hospital had to say. ".....It looks like a useful addition to the tools available
for parents striving to prevent problems with deformational plagiocephaly
of the occiput (flat head). To my mind, its positive features make it simple
to use, (and) it appears safe.....The benefits for children with
gastro-oesophageal reflux are, of course, manifest. In summary, I have no
hesitation in choosing to promote this product amongst patients for whom
I deem it to be a helpful tool."

| TESTIMONIAL - Thank you, you're a life saver.
"At 5 months our son had a seriously misshapen head
with ears out of alignment. After only 3 weeks on
the OCCBLOCK we've noticed a huge improvement
in the shape of his head.....The huge bonus of the
OCCBLOCK has been the relief he has had from
reflux. He now sleeps! For 5 months he would only
sleep for around 45 minutes before waking in pain.
On the OCCBLOCK he now sleeps 2-3 hours during
the day and 8-10 hours at night. Not only is he a
happier child, but we are no longer sleep deprived
parents.....We only wish it had been recommended to
us earlier."
