STRATEGIES FOR RAISING TODDLERS TO TEENS IN NEW ZEALAND
Diane
Levy is a highly successful New Zealand family therapist,
counsellor, parenting coach and speaker. In this book, she
presents her bold new approach to parenting with two main
aims;
1. To develop the emotional independence of children
2. To promote self discipline.
Her approach to interacting with children is completely
different. She encourages children to "make the right
decision" because, quite simply, "it is the right
decision to make". She shows you how to raise pleasant
children whose company you can enjoy. Diane teaches you
how to teach self-discipline and to experience and handle
their emotions. The simple pattern and rules can be adapted
right up to adult hood. They are shown to take responsibility
for chores, starting from a young age, with age-appropriate
support. And, because children are not allowed to "take
the easy road" for example by saying "I can't
do this", they learn how to problem solve and grow
into more confident individuals.
She defines people into four "personality" types,
and explains their emotional needs, and personal interactions.
This section is a real eye opener, and really makes understanding
children (and adults) mush easier. She shows how your approach
must be individualized for a child's personality in order
to best succeed.
With a wise, humourous and accessible writing style, Diane
Levy offers practical information on how to deal with tantrums,
sibling disputes, bullying, hitting, teasing and other unnecessary
habits children try on as they are growing up.
There are strategies for sleep patterns, eating habits,
shyness, toilet training, and teaching children to problem
solve.
This is a great all round behavioural guide, by one of New
Zealand's best authors in the genre. But be warned - this
book is not conventional, nor is its approach. But it is thought
provoking, and it is liberating in its wisdom. A must have
for any parent who has thought "there must be a better
way…."
